Statement by the Prime Minister on Purim

March 20, 2019
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Purim:

“Today at sunset, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will join together to celebrate the start of Purim.

“On this joyous occasion, families and loved ones will share traditional foods like hamantaschen, exchange gifts, give generously to those in need, and read together from the Book of Esther.

“Purim honours the story of Queen Esther and her uncle Mordecai, who saved the Jewish people from persecution in the ancient Persian Empire. It is a celebration of the resilience and courage of the Jewish people, and a reminder that it is up to all of us to stand against anti-Semitism, discrimination, and hatred in Canada and around the world.

“Today, we also recognize the contributions that Jewish Canadians make to our country. Canada’s Jewish community has played a critical role in building a stronger, more inclusive Canada, and that’s as true today as ever.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I wish a joyful Purim to all those celebrating.

“Chag Purim Sameach!”
