Ottawa, Ontario - April 19, 2019
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the occasion of Passover:
“Tonight at sundown, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate the beginning of Passover.
“At Seders around the globe, families and loved ones will come together to share a festive meal, read from the Haggadah, sing the four questions, and reflect on the story of the liberation of the Jewish people.
“An eight-day festival, Passover commemorates the Exodus and the Israelites’ escape from bondage in ancient Egypt. It celebrates freedom, the power of hope, and the immense perseverance of the Jewish people. The Passover story reminds us that each of us can be a voice for justice, and use our courage to change the world.
“This holiday is also a chance to celebrate Canada’s Jewish community, and the major role that Jewish Canadians have always played in shaping our country for the better. We will always stand together against anti-Semitism and hatred in all its forms, and work together to make our world a better one.
“On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish peace, health, and joy to all those celebrating.
“Chag Pesach Sameach!”
