HONOURING SACRIFICE ON YOM HAZIKARON

April 17, 2018 -

Tomorrow is Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and terror victims. It is a day of mourning and reflection over the sacrifices of almost 24,000 Israelis who have given their lives for the Jewish homeland as soldiers or as victims of terrorist attacks in Israel and abroad.

Today at sundown, a siren will sound across Israel to mark the advent of Yom Hazikaron and the country will come to a stop in honour of those who lost their lives in defence of Israel. At 11:00 A.M. on April 18th, the country will pause again as a second siren sounds. Throughout the day, across the country, there will be ceremonies and cemeteries will be full as Israelis visit the graves of their family members, loved ones and friends.

Jewish Federations of Canada - UIA, along with Jewish organizations and communities across the world, joins Israel in remembering its fallen. What most nations take for granted - the right to live peacefully within the confines of a homeland - is something that has not yet been achieved in 70 years of Israel’s existence. The list of fallen soldiers and victims of terror becomes longer every year.

We mourn the human toll that has been paid to build and secure the state of Israel. Their fallen are our fallen. We reaffirm our duty and commitment to support Israel and our people.

B'Shalom.
