PM Harper on Passover

Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada to mark the beginning of Passover

Ottawa, Ontario
3 April 2015

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark the beginning of Passover:

“Tonight at sundown, Jewish families and friends across Canada and around the world will gather to observe the beginning of Passover.

“Passover commemorates the Exodus and liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Over the next two nights, Jewish families and friends will gather to share traditional seder meals, during which the story of Exodus is contemplated.

“Passover is a time for all Canadians to reflect on the enduring strength and spirit of the Jewish people, and their contributions to building a peaceful, pluralistic and prosperous Canada. It is also an opportunity to remember those around the world who still struggle to achieve basic rights and freedoms.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I wish the Jewish community a meaningful and peaceful Passover.

“Chag Pesach kasher v’sameach!”
