Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century, killed 38 people in the Caribbean islands and 10 people in Cuba before turning towards Florida. At approximately the size of France, winds reached 290 km/h. Emergency officials are working to assess the damage this category 5 hurricane that left 7 million homes without power. More than 160,000 people are thought to be waiting out the storm in shelters across the state. Irma is now plowing into Georgia and toward other parts of the Deep South -- Alabama, Tennessee and the Carolinas
