NYL Israel Advocacy Initiative

Goals

This program, tailor-made for a select group of young adults (post-university to 39) from across Canada, will provide the tools, materials, and political connections in order to develop skills with the goals of participating within the Canadian political arena and advancing the pro-Israel agenda. The program will enable the next generation of the organized Jewish Community Leadership to be exposed to and interact with Canadian parliamentarians and senior government officials.  An annual commitment to the CJA or UJA campaign is required from all program participants.

Program Features

·        An hour-long Monthly Conference Call built around an advocacy curriculum developed and led by Shimon Fogel, Chief Executive Officer of the Canada-Israel Committee.

·        Information to engage participants into the political parties as active members and the tools to navigate the party systems.

·        A three-day visit to Ottawa in February 2007 for a retreat focusing on advocacy skill building, Israel education, and meetings with government officials and parliamentarians.

·        In the autumn of 2007 (traditionally around labour day), participants who have participated actively throughout the year will be invited to accompany a group of Canadian parliamentarians on a political mission to Israel. The Mission includes briefings with senior Israeli government officials, members of the Knesset and leading academics, strategic tours of the northern border and Golan Heights, Shabbat in Jerusalem, and much more.

Time & Financial Requirements

Participation in this initiative requires a 6 month commitment and a willingness to participate in monthly conference calls, an Ottawa retreat, and a summer political mission to Israel.  More specifically:

·        The conference calls entail approximately 2 hours a month of readings and an hour conference (as of December 2006);

·       Participants are expected to join a federal political party and throughout the year interact with local Members of Parliament;

·        The Ottawa Retreat will take place February 4th to 6th, leading into the CIJA Parliamentary dinner. The anticipated registration fee for the retreat is approximately $250 + travel expenses (travel from Eastern and Western Canada is subsidized);

·        A weeklong Mission to Israel with Members of Parliament takes place in the first week of September. The cost of the mission is, after subsidies, approximately $2500 from Toronto.
